Finding Your Life Purpose
The meaning of life is a mystery that continues to perplex even the brightest minds of our time. As interesting
as that insight would be, I think most of us would settle for knowing, "What is the meaning of my life?"
Many of us fall into the rut of mundane, mindless existence. We get a job, get married, have children, and work
toward that gold watch and retirement pension (if we're lucky).
There are periods of joy interspersed in those years of course, but for the most part we are on autopilot,
doing what needs to be done to survive. Each day blends into the next, until one day we realize that sixty or
seventy years have passed.
I believe that each of us has a definite reason for being here on earth. Part of our purpose may indeed involve
having children, a spouse and a job. However, there is something deeper that often gets lost along the way.
Your "life purpose", is your unique contribution to the world, the biggest part of who you are inside. You have
special talents to share with this world, things that no one else is qualified to do. There may be other people who
have similar abilities, but none that do it exactly the way you do.
Your job is to figure out exactly what those talents are, and begin sharing them with the world. Easier said
than done, however. What if you have no clue what talents you possess?
Begin by thinking about your passions in life. Do you love to paint? Compose or play music? Crunch numbers? Are
you an organizer at heart? Do you dream of being a novelist? Think about the things you used to dream of being when
you were a child. Think about the things you enjoy doing now, as an adult. Not necessarily hobbies, but passions. I
enjoy crocheting, but I have no desire to make it my life purpose. By "passions", I mean those things that thrill
you and infuse you with joy and excitement. The things you could do every single day and never tire of it. That is
Once you know what your passions are, how do you go about making them your life purpose? Begin using those
talents and sharing them with the world. You can turn your passions into your financial livelihood if you want to,
but you don't have to. You can still keep your job and fulfill your purpose at the same time.
However, if your job is draining you or monopolizing your time so that you don't have much left to devote to
your purpose, you may decide to make it your livelihood also. Many people fear turning their passion into their
business, because it can then become a "chore" that has to be done, rather than allowing them full creative
freedom. However, you have the choice in which direction to take it, and how big you wish to build your dream.
The more precisely you follow your heart, the more successful you will be.
Embracing your life purpose often entails surrendering to a power greater than yourself. The term "surrender"
can be intimidating. It implies defeat, and who would want that? However, surrendering in this case means simply
accepting your true Self, and what you were sent here to do.
Many of us fear that our life purpose will end up being something we despise. Why would that be? Why would God
want us to do something that doesn't fulfill us and make us feel like we are doing something important?
Your life purpose will always be something that infuses you with joy and satisfaction. You will feel like you
are truly making a difference in this world, and you will be making a difference in this world. It's what you are
meant to do. If you have no desire to build your life purpose into a business, then don't. The only requirement is
that you use your gifts to bring more light and love into the world.
You can also use your talents by working for others. Then your passion literally becomes your job, and you can
accomplish two things at once. Many career choices will require a degree or at least a certain level of knowledge
If you don't have that yet, that should be your next step. Learn all you can about your passion. Read books,
take some classes, enroll in a degree program. Even if it will take years to accomplish, don't let that stop you.
It is never too late to begin changing your life for the better.
Every step you take will bring you closer to living the life you imagine.
The most important thing is that you do something with your dreams. Don't be one of those people who looks back
across their life and sees nothing but regrets. Don't settle for a mundane existence. Somewhere in this world,
there are people who need the gifts that you can share with them. You deserve a meaningful life, and you do have
what it takes to create it. Begin now . . .
